I. Largo; Vivace
II. Cantabile e misterioso
III. Agitato
GIRTAIN
duration: 12 minutes
This Second Sonata for Solo Flute was commissioned during a casual meeting at a gas station
restaurant over coffee and salad, with my daughter Alma tugging at my shirt while Juan
Bautista and I discussed current and future projects as I prepared to leave the country. Juan, a
dear friend and a passionate advocate for composers in southern Chile, granted me complete
creative freedom. However, his enthusiasm for my First Sonata naturally led me to shape this
piece as a modern interpretation of the classical sonata. Inspired by the silences and dramatic
variety found in Telemann’s Fantasies, the work fully explores the expressive capabilities of the
western concert flute.
